    Description

Here we have an exquisitely carved World War I U.S. Aviation picture frame that remains in excellent condition. It is constructed from a laminated airplane propeller and interictally hand carved. The frame is thicker at the base and tapers as it goes up towards the top. The top is with a single scallop cut edge. To the top left is carved an aviators wing and prop collar insignia and to the top right a French fleur de leis. The center is with a cut out heart shaped hole for a photograph. Carved below the lower tip of the heart is, “FRANCE” within an arc and with a very intricate stippled background. To the lower left of the frame is the date, “18” within a circle with the same stippled background as the word, “FRANCE” and to the lower right, “19” in a circle with the same stippled background. The wood is with a very attractive chestnut brown color and nicely age toned. The reverse is with a square cut out that measures 5 x 5¾ inches and is with a fitted wooden back plate. The overall dimensions of the frame are 6¾ x 9¾ inches. This is a small work of art that was probably made by an American veteran pilot of the Great War for his sweetheart back home. It is a true treasure that is in undamaged condition and displays beautifully.
